Cashmere - A versatile natural product that combines craftsmanship and luxury
In the vastness of the Mongolian steppe, where the wind blows unceasingly strong and the landscape seems to stretch endlessly to the horizon, a scenery of sublime beauty reveals itself. Green hills and steep rock formations rise in the distance, while the sky is dotted with occasional white clouds. The sun beams its warming rays on the land, bathing the entire environment in a golden-brown light.
The Mongolian steppe is a land of extremes. Temperatures vary greatly between the seasons, from freezing cold in winter to blazing heat in summer. The wind blows across the open landscape, carrying with it the fine sands of the Gobi Desert. It is a landscape that demands endurance and resilience.
Adapted to these extremes is the cashmere goat. Especially in winter, when its dense wool coat protects it from the icy winds and provides warmth and comfort in temperatures as low as -40°C! The wool coat consists of an outer, coarser layer, also called guard hair, under which very fine and soft fibres grow. These valuable fibres form the basis of the finest cashmere wool.
The production of cashmere is an art form that has been perfected over more than 1000 years. Only about 150 to 200 grams of cashmere can be obtained per goat per year. In spring, during the goats' change of coat, the precious fibres are extracted by hand or with special combs. It is a process that requires patience and dexterity to ensure that the fibres remain undamaged and retain their exceptional softness. The careful selection of the highest quality fibres and the craftsmanship involved in the production of cashmere are crucial to the quality and longevity of this material.
The fineness of cashmere fibres is measured in microns: the lower the value in microns, the finer and softer the cashmere. High-quality cashmere has a fineness of about 15 microns. But the quality of cashmere is not only determined by the fineness of the fibres. The length of the fibres, their purity and the way they are processed also play a role. High-quality cashmere is carefully selected and produced under strict quality standards, which explains the high price of this noble material. The price can often be used as a first indication of high-quality products that are durable, soft and provide ultimate comfort.
From the majestic peaks of the mountains to the catwalks of the most prestigious ateliers, cashmere has found its place in the world of fashion. It embodies elegance and sophistication and is appreciated by many around the world. After all, the natural product cashmere stands for an incomparable luxury that never goes out of fashion and adds a touch of elegance.
